Verify contractor's license information

Obtain the contractor's license number and check them out with the state contractor's board:

Research

Find out what your state requires for contractors to do business (licenses and types of insurance). Before you call a contractor, have an idea of what your needs are so potential contractors will have a better understanding and can provide you with an accurate quote.

Check the contractor's record with the Better Business Bureau

The BBB Standards for Trust are a comprehensive set of best practices for how businesses should treat the public in a fair and honest manner. Visit them at www.bbb.org.

Ask friends, neighbors and co-workers for contractor referrals

Their experience, feedback and recommendations may help with your decision.

Get written, itemized estimates

Receive at least three bids that include costs for labor, parts, equipment, etc., as well as appliance efficiency and warranty information. Keep in mind, cheaper is not always better. If the lower priced appliance is not as efficient as another make and model, your energy costs may be higher. Contractors are required to include their license number on all invoices, vehicles and advertising materials.

Keep records

Keep files of all documents related to your project including contracts and receipts. Get a written contract and do not sign anything until you completely understand the terms. Do not pay in cash and only make the final payment when you are satisfied.
